Correct diagnosis is the first step in any plant healthcare program. Our ISA Certified Arborists are trained to identify whether stress is caused by disease, insects, or environmental factors. Accurate diagnosis ensures we treat the root cause, not just the symptoms, avoiding unnecessary chemical applications.
Not all clients need to be on a full Guardian Program, and many issues can be addressed with a single treatment. Prescription treatments are targeted for a specific pest or disease. Your Consulting Arborist will help identify specific issues on your property, discuss the various options with you and provide you with a written plan.
All plants require the proper amount of light, oxygen in the soil, water and nutrients to thrive. The required amount of nutrients will vary between species of plants, existing soil conditions and the pH of the soil.
Your Consulting Arborist will look for visual signs of nutrient deficiencies and may also recommend taking a soil sample while on site. Soil samples are sent to a private lab to be analyzed so that the proper fertilizer can be used, specific to your plants’ needs. Application of most nutrients is performed as liquid that is injected directly into the soil, where it can easily be absorbed by the roots of the plant.
The root systems are just as, if not more important to the overall health of trees and shrubs. Root issues are one of the number one leading causes of tree decline, lack of vigor and death. Issues with the root system is also one of the primary reasons trees blow over during storms. Although we cannot see what is going on below ground, our Consulting Arborist are experienced in observing symptoms, even ones that you may not be aware of, throughout the canopy of the tree or along the trunk that are indicative of problems below ground.
Whether its treating root rot, addressing compacted soil or removal of stem girdling roots we can help. Your Consulting Arborist will discuss their observations and work with you to develop a plan.

Deer damage can devastate an ornamental landscape overnight. Our deer repellant programs are designed to protect your investment from local wildlife. We use effective, persistent deterrents that discourage deer from feeding on your valuable shrubs and trees.
Generally, the pruning performed by most landscapers on your ornamentals shrubs is focused on aesthetics and keeping the shrubs a certain size or shape. While this is certainly important to maintain regularly, the shrub pruning that Douglas PHC performs is focused more on the plant’s health. Routine sheering of plants creates a thick outer shell of growth, reducing the amount of needed air and light to the plants’ interior. This environment creates an ideal habitat for pests and insects and ideal conditions for disease and pathogens.
By selectively hand pruning shrubs, your goals of maintaining a certain size or shape can be achieved while promoting the plant’s natural structure and habit, ultimately creating a happier and healthier landscape. Restoring and older landscape via selective or natural restoration pruning as opposed to total plant replacement may be an option following a site evaluation with your Arborist.
Douglas PHC’s shrub and ornamental pruning are typically performed in the winter months while the plants, insects, and diseases are dormant. Since this is selective hand pruning, the concern with flowering is not an issue. Pruning cuts are made to permanently remove growth where needed, leaving plenty of existing foliage and buds for springtime flowers.
